Spund

Spund is an optional fermentation pressure-adjustment task. Use it when a beer should be brought to a target pressure during fermentation. It is available for FVEs and unit tanks, and can also be used as a pressure-adjustment task on yeast brinks.

Set the brewery’s default Pressure unit to bar or PSI in brewery settings before creating tasks. This sets the default for new Spund tasks; you can select a unit on each task. Completed tasks retain the entered value and unit, while BrewKeeper records the vessel’s current pressure in bar.

Add Spund to a Recipe

Use a recipe task when the same beer should normally be spunded to the same pressure.

1. Open the recipe and go to its fermentation cellar tasks.
2. On the relevant fermentation day, choose Add task > Spund.
3. Enter the Target pressure and select its Pressure unit.
4. Choose either No gravity trigger to schedule it by day, or At gravity and enter the gravity target.
5. Save the task.

When a batch is scheduled from the recipe, its Spund task can still be adjusted in the batch scheduler. The recipe target is the recommended pressure shown to the cellar brewer.

Fermentation only

Spund is a fermentation task. It is not available as a post-fermentation or BBT task.

Add Spund to a Scheduled Batch

Use an ad-hoc Spund task when a recipe does not contain one, or when the batch needs its own planned pressure adjustment.

1. Open the batch schedule in the fermentation phase.
2. Choose Add task > Spund.
3. Enter the target pressure and select the pressure unit.
4. Save the task and schedule it on the required day.

Ad-hoc Spund tasks are planned directly on the batch. Their target pressure is the pressure to set; they do not have a separate recipe recommendation.

Complete a Spund Task in the Cellar

When the task is due, open it from the batch cellar panel.

• For a recipe-derived task, BrewKeeper shows the recommended pressure. Enter the actual pressure set and its unit before completing the task.
• For an ad-hoc task, confirm completion after setting the task’s configured target pressure.
• Completed task details show the recommended target and recorded actual pressure. Completing the task records a vessel-state snapshot; it does not submit or alter a daily fermentation log.

Gravity-triggered tasks

For a task set to At gravity, BrewKeeper compares the latest fermentation gravity reading with the task’s gravity target.

• Complete the task normally when the recorded gravity is at or below the target.
• If the current gravity is still above the target, BrewKeeper warns that Spund is being set early. Enter an Early Spund note explaining why before completing the task.

Keep fermentation readings current

Record the current fermentation gravity before completing a gravity-triggered Spund task, so the early-setting warning reflects the batch’s latest reading.

Spund on Yeast Brinks

Spund is also available when adding a yeast brink task. Select Spund from the brink task menu, then set the pressure adjustment target and unit.

Brink Spund uses the existing pressure-adjustment workflow. It does not use a gravity trigger and is optional; use it only where your brink process needs a pressure adjustment.

Practical guidance

• Spund is optional. You can use it for every beer, only selected styles, or not at all.
• Use Spund consistently in task names and instructions; BrewKeeper does not use a separate “Cap” workflow.
• Check the selected unit whenever changing a scheduled task, particularly when recipes are shared between breweries that use different pressure units.
